Käthe Kollwitz

This collaborative project between students from Germany and Belgium uses the art of Käthe Kollwitz as inspiration to express opinions on pressing contemporary issues. Käthe Kollwitz, known for her influential works addressing social justice, poverty, and the human cost of war, is a role model for how art can be a tool for social and political commentary. Following her example, students will create drawings that reflect their concerns on modern-day topics such as climate change, inequality, or social justice. The project will culminate in a second meeting in Belgium, where the students will bring their artistic ideas to life in a podcast project. Choosing Käthe Kollwitz is vital because her work demonstrates the enduring power of art to confront societal issues and give a voice to the marginalised. Studying her art teaches students how creative expression can raise awareness and inspire action on critical issues. This project encourages them to critically engage with the world around them and understand the role of art in social change. By reflecting on current events through the lens of Kollwitz's themes, students develop their artistic skills and grow as active, empathetic individuals capable of using their voices to shape a better future.
